Sea Kayaking - Frequently Asked Questions
1Will I be able to kayak if I have never done this before?
A big percentage of our clients are first-time paddlers. If you have a very basic level of fitness you should easily be able to enjoy this activity. If conditions become a little more testing we will take into account that you are a novice, and either pair you with a stronger paddler or suggest that you join on another day.
2Is there an age limit for the sea kayak tour?
The minimum age to join us on the sea kayak tour is 10.
From age 10 to 13 we suggest that a child is paired up with an adult on a double kayak.
Smaller children could make it difficult for an adult to manage the steering of the kayak if the weather conditions change and wind picks up.
3What should we wear when kayaking?
You can wear shorts, t-shirts and any form of sun protection is advised.
Hats, sunscreen and sunglasses can be used.
When it is a cooler day you can wear a long sleeve top, the thickness dependent on how cold it is. Remember that the buoyancy aid also provides additional insulation.
People often ask if they should wear a wetsuit or neoprene top. We find that this traps the heat while you are paddling and can get very warm and stuffy.
4What can I bring along on the tour?
You are welcome to bring along a bottle of water, sun protection and also a waterproof casing for your cellphone or camera. For anyone wanting to take photographs with their cellphones and who does not have a waterproof bag, we sell them at R200 each. You do not have to take the risk of dropping your phone in the water when stored in the see through pouch which has a string attached that you can use to hang it round your neck while paddling.
5Is there a place to store my personal items while out on the water?
Yes. You can leave your extras (bags, towels, car keys, wallets, etc.) stored in our office while out kayaking. We lock the office and switch on the alarm so that your belongings are secure while you are out at sea.
6How can we make payment?
Payment can be made in cash, by EFT or with card.
For bigger groups we will request advanced payment, but smaller groups or couples can pay on the day of the tour. We kindly request that we are given advanced notice of cancellation or drop in group numbers. If no cancellations were made more than 24 hours prior to the tour meeting time we will send a payment link for clients who did not show up for the tour.
7What kayaks do you use?
We use Perception Tribe sit-on-top self bailing sea kayaks. Perception is one of the oldest kayak brands in the world and the Tribe is a super stable kayak, with back rests that provides extra comfort. We find that even complete novices feel very comfortable, because the sit-on-top kayaks do not make you feel constricted as can be caused by the sit-in type of kayaks.
In the unlikely event of clients falling into the water it is also a very easy kayak to get back on. We have 9 double and 1 single kayak (in case of uneven numbers) that we use on the tours.
8Is there a weight limit?
Over 115kg could be pushing it.
9When is the best time of year to come kayaking?
Most people would think summer months only, but that is definitely not the case. All year round provides good days for kayaking. Summer of course has warmer and more sunny days, but also brings many windy afternoons. Winter on the other hand is cooler and has many completely calm, warm and beautiful days. At any time of year it is an experience to enjoy!
10What Marine life can we expect to see?
We are very fortunate to be able to conduct our tours in a Marine Reserve. From July to November this area becomes a Marine Protected Area called the Walker Bay Whale Sanctuary. We have a permit that allows us to operate our tours in this beautiful area. There is the possibility of seeing Cape Fur Seals, African Penguins, Dolphins and even three different species of whales while kayaking in this area. We are however not a boat based whale watching operator and do not sell the tour as whale watching.
11Where do we kayak and what does the tour entail?
We depart from Hermanus Old Harbour and enjoy a round trip inside the marine reserve. The direction is dependent on wind direction and ocean conditions. We spend roughly 90 minutes on the water after the thorough safety briefing and check in. We will be doing plenty of paddling, but the tour is also a marine educational, with your knowledgeable guide presenting you with a lot of relevant information about the marine life in our area.
